Social Media the Next Generation Word of Mouth

The word of mouth marketing is vital for every company, for each happy customer/consumer you make you can drive down various new ones.

 
It’s an unpaid form of promotion in which satisfied customers tell other people how much they like a business, product or service.

 
Of all the advertising forms word of mouth is the most credible one, only because a person puts their name on the line every time they make a recommendation, and that person has nothing to gain but the judgment of those who are listening.

Author Kimberly Whitler from Forbes magazine says

“Word of Mouth Marketing (WOMM). Isn’t this really the primitive social media platform? I grew up with the famous Faberge commercial that showed a woman who ‘told 2 friends’ about the product and how ‘they told 2 friends … and so on … and so on’. Hasn’t WOM always been a persuasive way to impact business results?”

 

For example when I share my views about a particular place and recommend my friends and family to visit they have expectations regarding the place & if they do not receive what they have expected not only will all next time not listen to my suggestions they may even make others do the same.
Hence one thinks n number of times before sharing and shares only when they are fully satisfied & are your loyal customers.
I take it this way, before the social media’s origin word of mouth was limited. We used to share the information in one on one conversations when we felt the need of it.

Now, however, we may not even realize it but are a part of this marketing & advertising form.

 
Have you ever thought when we tag ourselves at places we like, via social media, we are indeed confirming with our audience, that we have visited the place?
Further with the social media tags, people do share their views via snaps.
Ancestral word-of-mouth was often restricted to someone asking a question, and someone replying one-on-one. In social media word-of-mouth, no one has to put a question, yet everyone can see the answer. A highly effective one to, many effects.

 
People have always been talking about their experiences regarding products services & brands. With the social media in play, the impact of word of mouth to mouth has evolved.
Few say:

In the history, marketers focused on the four P’s

Product,
Price,
Promotion,
Place,

However, now there should be a new direction or center of attraction for marketers, I would say the three E’s.

Engage,
Equip,
Empower.

The three E’s can drive your company to a great WOM marketing campaigns, to be one of the most beloved plus talked about brands.
In today’s social media age, word-of-mouth can travel fast, in fact very fast. The measure, rate and real-time nature of the social Web and the increased possibilities for people to share and express themselves play a significant role in this.

Especially, when the estimated number of global social media users, is projected to grow from 2.1 billion in 2015 to over 2.5 billion by 2018.

Social media now plays almost as huge role in purchasing decisions as does TV, and 57% of purchasers say they’re influenced to think more highly of business after seeing assertive comments or praise online.

It is not just about sharing your status or sharing your pictures anymore. It’s more than that.

We can say ‘The Social Media as the Next Gen Word of Mouth.’

If we talk about numbers below are few statistics I found online:

As of July 2015, the cumulative worldwide population was 7.3 billion, while the internet had 3.17 billion users by then.
There exist 2.3 billion active social media users
Today if one can check, 91% of retail brands use 2 or more social media channels to promote themselves.
Internet users own an average of 5.54 social media accounts
Social media users must be risen by approximately 176 million in the previous closing year.
Around, 1 million new active mobile social users are scored every day.That’s 12 each second.
Facebook Messenger and Whatsapp manage 60 billion messages a day

That’s solely why I fell; Social Media is the new Word of Mouth!

  1. I read a post yesterday where they recommended the reviews on AirBNB t help you make the best choice. So personal recommendation is very powerful. What we need now is a way to accurately assess the reviews. People with a negative experience are more likely to leave remarks than satisfied customers.

  4. My dad suggested Blue Apron and sent me a free week of meals. It was so much fun! I never would have done anything like that unless he hadn’t described how the process works, but I got 3 free meals and learned some new tricks in the kitchen. I know that I sound like an affiliate, but I am really not! Perhaps just a good example of word of mouth marketing at work! 🙂

  5. Yes, totally agree. Social media is the new word-of-mouth. I can’t think of one important purchase I’ve mae in the past few years where I haven’t looked online to see what people are saying about the product.

  7. Wow, i never thought of it that way…that Tagging tells people where you’ve been. Social media is powerful. I read reviews all the time. Word of mouth is not what it used to be since the Internet emerged.

  8. Word-of-mouth definitely isn’t as effective these days if you ask me. I know I’m always looking to social media etc. for my recommendations. So long as you take them with a grain of salt (I hate the obviously paid-for glowing reviews that companies sometimes use – ugh), they’re super helpful. Such an informative read! 🙂

  9. Indeed technology changes a lot of especially when it comes to businesses. Social media platforms are being used now to get more engagements with the clients, suppliers and other possible investors and customers too.

  10. The thing is so many of us are in front of the screen and online that we’ve become use to searching everything up online. the resources are so readily available that it’s sometimes easier to read reviews online rather than getting a personal recommendation.

  11. Since it is how many of us communicate now a days, it is only logical that it would be word of mouth. Although in this instance its keying of words onto computer screen. It just doesn’t sound as nice as word of mouth.

  12. You should see a series if you can called Black Mirror. It about various different story on technology. There was one episode called Nosedive and the way people communicate is through social media and then they had to rate how it went. You should look it up on Netflix. I can see it heading that way….
